In closing out 2018 we toasted the end of year Sunday’s brunch with a mule. New Years Eve was the time for champagne and champagne cocktails and I thought a mule would be nice and light for day spent in sunny Ft. Lauderdale with family and friends.
It’s winter in Florida and blood oranges are in season! Blood oranges have a hint raspberry flavor so this citrus has already started to layer flavors for you as well as a festive color.
Here I mixed fresh blood orange juice, vodka, St Germain and fresh thyme and topping it off with ginger beer for a change from the typical Sunday Mimosa. You can easily make this ahead of time, just make sure you add the ginger beer right before serving so that it stays fizzy. Drop a couple cranberries or some pomegranate arils for a pretty holiday look.
This cocktail would also be great made with. grapefruit juice or clementine juice.
Blood Orange Elderflower Mule
2 oz vodka
1/2 oz St Germain (Elderflower liquor)
1/2 cup fresh blood orange juice
Fresh thyme – *give your thyme a smack just before adding to shaker. (great video)
Add all ingredients to shaker with ice, except for the ginger beer. Shake for 15 seconds and strain into ice filled glass. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with fresh thyme sprig – don’t forget to smack it.
