It’s interesting how some liqueurs have been sidelined to the dessert or shots menu. I find that to be a lack of creativity. Don’t get me wrong, I love the creative martini concoctions that have become so popular, like the chocolate or espresso martini.
With Millennials looking for variety in cocktails, the floodgates are opening and creativity is flowing freely. There are craft distilleries, varieties of flavored bitters and infused simple syrups showing up on menus around the globe.
Let’s take the standard Old Fashioned. Bourbon or Rye, Angostura bitters, sugar cube and a few drops of water. Now, make a few changes. Substitute sugar cube for flavored simple syrup or say, a liqueur for sweetness added flavor. The possibilities are limitless.
3 oz Bourbon
1/2 oz Luxardo
Dash Orange Bitters
Dash Cherry Bitters
Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass with ice, and stir until well-chilled.
Strain into a rocks glass filled with large ice cubes.
Garnish with an orange peel and cherry
